The Mission
Saint Angela Merici School is a co-educational grammar school
whose cornerstone encompasses the teachings and the values of
Jesus Christ. Our south Bronx school serves a multi ethnic
community with diverse religious beliefs. We help our students
develop strong academic skills, moral strength and love of thy
neighbor. We guide our students on their path to become noble,
holy, well-rounded and productive leaders in the community.
Our Community
There are many challenges that must be overcome daily—crime,
high unemployment and modest job skills. For example, in our
school 100% of our students qualify for the free lunch
program. In the community over 42% of the children under 18
years live below the Federal poverty line and a single parent
heads over 30% of the families.
St Angela’s School offers the children of these struggling
families a well-rounded education in a safe and secure
environment. Our school is an icon in the neighborhood, a
place where children learn and develop. Some of our students
are the first in their families to go to high school. Despite
the limited resources of the families there is a high value on
education. Many work two and three jobs so that their children
have the opportunity of being educated at our school.
Spirituality
Over the last few years we have been so pleased to witness at
St. Angela Merici School the reaffirmation of our Catholic
identity. This has been manifested in our sacramental program.
Each year the number of children who participate in the
sacramental program has increased. As part of the staff of
Saint Angela Merici we now have three Sisters who embody a
life of commitment to Christ. We have made sure that statues
of the Blessed Mother and crucifixes are displayed in every
classroom to remind the students that Saint Angela Merici’s
focus is Christ and his Church. Some beautiful Church
traditions are back in the school - the recitation of the
Rosary, the Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the
celebration of our Patroness Saint Angela Merici.
